UK to Spain Removal Cost

The NIE (Número de Identificación de Extranjero) is Spain's personal tax and identification number for foreign nationals. It is required for every formal transaction in Spain, opening a bank account, signing a lease or property purchase contract, registering with the Spanish health service (Sistema Nacional de Salud), paying taxes and, critically, filing a Transfer of Residence customs declaration with the Aduanas. The NIE is obtained from the Spanish Consulate in London, or from a Comisaría de Policía (National Police station) or Oficina de Extranjeros (Foreigners' Office) in Spain.

A Spanish fiscal representative can apply on your behalf if you have not yet travelled to Spain. RMV's move managers confirm NIE status at the pre-move survey stage, as the NIE number is required on the Aduanas Transfer of Residence declaration and its absence is one of the most common causes of customs hold delays on the route.

Since Brexit, British nationals moving to Spain for long-term residence require the TIE (Tarjeta de Identidad de Extranjero), Spain's biometric residency card for non-EU nationals, rather than the green EU residency certificate (Certificado de Registro de Ciudadano de la Unión) that British nationals used before January 2021.

The TIE is obtained from the Comisaría de Policía or Oficina de Extranjeros at the Spanish address after arrival, by appointment (cita previa). For movers arriving from January 2021 onwards, the TIE is the primary proof-of-residency document for Aduanas purposes.

For British nationals who registered as EU residents before Brexit (i.e., those who already held the green certificate), the Aduanas position is that existing EU certificates remain valid, though updated TIE cards are now strongly recommended to avoid ambiguity.

Spanish IVA at 21% applies to imported household goods where Transfer of Residence duty-free relief is not established. On a £60,000 declared household, a failed Transfer of Residence application results in an IVA liability of £12,600.

The 12-month prior residency requirement makes Spain's ToR bar higher than France (6 months), Germany (6 months), Italy (6 months), Netherlands (6 months) and Portugal (6 months). RMV's pre-move documentation audit specifically verifies 12-month UK residency evidence before preparing the Aduanas submission.

Documents Required for Removals to Spain from the UK

The following documents are required for Aduanas customs clearance and Transfer of Residence duty-free relief. RMV provides all forms, completion guidance and pre-departure document review on every UK-to-Spain booking.

  • Passport copy, identity and nationality for the Aduanas
  • NIE (Número de Identificación de Extranjero), Spain's mandatory foreign national identification number; required on the Transfer of Residence declaration
  • TIE (Tarjeta de Identidad de Extranjero) or pre-Brexit EU residency certificate, proof of Spanish residency status for non-EU nationals
  • Empadronamiento (Padrón Municipal) certificate, proof of registration with the Spanish local council (Ayuntamiento) at the Spanish address
  • Itemised inventory list (lista de enseres), specifying item description, quantity and estimated second-hand value; preferably in Spanish or with a Spanish translation
  • Proof of 12 months' prior UK or non-Spanish residence, UK council tax bills, bank statements, employment letters or equivalent documentation covering 12 consecutive months immediately before establishing Spanish residence
  • Proof of Spanish address, rental contract, property deed (escritura) or utility bill
  • Self-declaration confirming goods have been owned and in personal use for at least six months and will not be sold or transferred within 12 months of import
  • Signed customs agent authorisation, allowing RMV to act as direct representative with the Aduanas for your consignment
  • CMR cargo movement form, provided by the driver at UK collection

Where British Nationals Move in Spain: The Costas, Cities, Islands and Emerging Destinations

Spain's British expat population of over 360,000 registered residents is distributed across a wide geography, from the Costa del Sol in the south to the Costa Brava in the north, and from Madrid in the interior to the Balearic and Canary Islands in the Atlantic. Each region generates a distinct type of removal, with different volumes, access constraints, logistics requirements and customs documentation considerations.

Costa del Sol and Málaga, The Highest-Volume British Expat Region

The Costa del Sol, stretching east and west of Málaga, is the largest single concentration of British expats in Spain and the highest-volume removal destination in the country. The British population is concentrated in Marbella, Fuengirola, Torremolinos, Nerja, Estepona and the axe roads running inland.

The Costa del Sol draws primarily retirement relocations and second-home buyers, with a secondary layer of young professional and digital nomad movers attracted by Marbella's growing luxury economy and the Málaga city tech sector, which has expanded rapidly since Google and Accenture established significant operations in Málaga city between 2022 and 2025. Full-load villa retirement moves are the dominant removal format on this route; part-load holiday apartment moves are a consistent secondary volume.

Many Costa del Sol properties are on urbanizaciones, private gated residential developments on hillside plots, with access roads that narrow significantly on approach. RMV plans transhipment to a smaller vehicle for urbanización addresses where the main removal vehicle cannot access the plot.

Our removals service covers all Costa del Sol addresses with full access assessment; our storage service bridges UK property sale and Spanish completion timelines.

Costa Blanca and Alicante, The Largest Settled British Community

The Costa Blanca, centred on Alicante province, has the highest number of registered British residents of any Spanish region. Torrevieja, Orihuela Costa, Benidorm, Jávea (Xàbia), Dénia and Calpe are the primary British centres. The Costa Blanca draws a mix of retirement relocations, holiday home buyers and younger British professionals attracted by the relatively low cost of property and living compared to the Costa del Sol.

The Orihuela Costa area south of Torrevieja is notable for its particularly high density of British nationals and its established British infrastructure: British-run businesses, English-language GP surgeries, British grocery products and British social organisations. Torrevieja has one of the highest proportions of British-born residents of any Spanish municipality.

Madrid, Finance, Tech and Corporate Relocations

Madrid is Spain's capital and primary destination for British professionals relocating for employment. The city's financial sector (Bolsa de Madrid, BBVA, Santander, CaixaBank corporate operations), technology sector (Amazon Web Services Spain, Microsoft Iberia, Google Spain, Telefónica) and consulting/professional services firms draw consistent British professional relocation volume.

Madrid moves are characterised by one-to-three bedroom apartment contents, often with fixed delivery windows tied to employment start dates and corporate relocation packages. Many Madrid apartment buildings have lifts, but older properties in the Malasaña, Lavapiés and Chueca neighbourhoods have staircase access constraints similar to Lisbon. Our man and van service handles smaller Madrid corporate relocations and studio apartment moves efficiently.

Barcelona, Tech, Startups, Digital Nomads and the 22@

Barcelona is Spain's second-largest city and its primary tech and startup hub. The 22@ innovation district in Poblenou, Barcelona's designated tech quarter, hosts Glovo, Wallapop, Social Point, King (Candy Crush developer), Factorial HR, and dozens of international tech companies with Spanish operations. Barcelona also hosts the annual Mobile World Congress, which anchors a permanent professional conference and events economy. Barcelona's Gothic Quarter, Gracia and Sant Pere neighbourhoods have the same narrow-street and staircase access constraints as Madrid's historic zones and Lisbon's Alfama, older Eixample apartment buildings with service stairs of 60–70 cm width are common.

Our handyman service provides furniture disassembly and reassembly where staircase access requires items to be stripped to component parts.

Valencia and Murcia, Remote Workers, Families and the Growing Digital Nomad Scene

Valencia is Spain's third-largest city and one of the fastest-growing relocation destinations for British remote workers and younger families in 2026. Lower property prices than Madrid or Barcelona, a good climate, a strong local food scene and the Spanish government's Non-Lucrative Visa and Digital Nomad Visa making Valencia a particularly cost-effective choice.

The La Marina district of Valencia and the L'Eixample neighbourhood have established international communities. Murcia, south of Valencia, draws budget-conscious British buyers at even lower property prices than the Costa Blanca, with good Alicante airport access and a mild climate.

Balearic Islands: Mallorca, Ibiza, Menorca and Formentera, Sea Freight Required

The Balearic Islands, Mallorca, Ibiza, Menorca and Formentera, are an autonomous community of Spain located in the western Mediterranean, 85–300 km off the Spanish mainland coast.

They are not accessible by road removal from the UK or mainland Spain. All removal shipments to the Balearics require roll-on/roll-off or container sea freight from a mainland Spanish port: principally Barcelona, Valencia or Palma de Mallorca's freight facilities for intra-island transfers. Crossings to Palma de Mallorca run from Barcelona (approximately 8 hours by overnight ferry) and Valencia (approximately 8 hours). Ibiza is served from Barcelona (9 hours) and Valencia (6.5 hours). Menorca from Barcelona (9 hours).

Mallorca draws the largest and most diverse British community among the Balearics: retirement relocations to the southwest (Port d'Andratx, Sóller, Deà), professional and media-sector buyers in Palma de Mallorca itself, and high-value property buyers in the Tramuntana mountain villages. Ibiza has a year-round British professional and creative industry community alongside its seasonal economy.

RMV coordinates the complete UK-to-Balearics logistics chain: UK collection, mainland Spain road transit, port consolidation and inter-island sea freight booking. Our storage service holds goods in the UK while ferry schedules are confirmed.

Frequently Asked Questions, Removals to Spain from the UK

What is the NIE and do I need it before my removal to Spain?

The NIE (Número de Identificación de Extranjero) is Spain's mandatory identification number for all foreign nationals, required for opening a bank account, signing property contracts, registering with the health service and filing a Transfer of Residence customs declaration with the Aduanas.

You should apply for your NIE before your removal date if possible: it can be obtained from the Spanish Consulate General in London by appointment. If you have not obtained your NIE before the shipment departs the UK, the Aduanas customs declaration will be incomplete and the shipment may be held at the border. RMV's pre-move survey confirms NIE status as a priority step on every UK-to-Spain booking.

What is the TIE and how is it different from the old green EU certificate?

The TIE (Tarjeta de Identidad de Extranjero) is Spain's biometric residency card for non-EU nationals. British nationals moving to Spain since Brexit, after 1 January 2021, are required to obtain a TIE rather than the green EU citizen residency certificate (Certificado de Registro) that was used before Brexit. The TIE is obtained at the Comisaría de Policía or Oficina de Extranjeros in the Spanish province of residence by appointment (cita previa) after arrival. It serves as the primary proof-of-residency document for Aduanas Transfer of Residence customs clearance.

What is Spain's 12-month residency rule for Transfer of Residence customs relief?

Spain's Aduanas requires that movers claiming Transfer of Residence duty-free relief demonstrate that they have been resident in the UK (or another non-Spanish country) for at least 12 consecutive months immediately prior to establishing Spanish residence.

This 12-month prior residency requirement is stricter than the standard EU Transfer of Residence rules applied in France, Germany, Italy, Netherlands and Portugal, which focus primarily on the 6-month ownership period for goods rather than a specific prior-residency duration. Evidence for Spain's 12-month rule includes UK council tax bills, bank statements, employment letters or utility bills covering the full 12-month period.

RMV's pre-move documentation audit specifically verifies this evidence before preparing the Aduanas submission.

What is Spanish IVA and what is the rate?

Spanish IVA (Impuesto sobre el Valor Añadido) is Spain's VAT equivalent, applied at 21% on imported household goods where Transfer of Residence relief is not established. On a £60,000 declared household, a failed Transfer of Residence application results in an IVA liability of £12,600.

The Canary Islands apply a separate tax (IGIC, Impuesto General Indirecto Canario) at 7% rather than mainland IVA, making the Canary Islands route significantly more financially forgiving if Transfer of Residence relief is not fully established. Ceuta and Melilla are also IVA-exempt territories with their own indirect tax arrangements.

Can I move to Mallorca or Ibiza by road removal?

No, the Balearic Islands are not accessible by road. All removal shipments require sea freight from a mainland Spanish port (Barcelona or Valencia primarily). RMV coordinates the complete UK-to-Balearics chain: UK collection, road transit to the port, consolidation and roll-on/roll-off or container ferry booking to Palma de Mallorca, Ibiza or Mahón (Menorca). Our storage service holds UK goods while ferry capacity is confirmed.

What is the Empadronamiento and when do I need it?

The Empadronamiento (or Padrón Municipal) is Spain's municipal residency registration, the formal registration of your address with the local Ayuntamiento (town hall). It is required for accessing Spanish public services, enrolling children in state schools, registering with a GP and as supplementary proof of Spanish residence for the Aduanas Transfer of Residence declaration. It can be completed at the Ayuntamiento after arrival with a rental contract or property deed as supporting documentation.
