RMV Storage & Removals provides professional removals from the UK to Romania, covering full load, part load and groupage services with complete post-Brexit customs clearance, Transfer of Residence documentation and door-to-door delivery to Bucharest, Cluj-Napoca, Timișoara, Iași, Brașov and all Romanian regions.
Romania is the second country in this series, after Poland, where UK-to-destination removals are substantially driven by return migration. Romania has one of the largest diaspora communities in the UK, with approximately 1.2 million Romanian-born residents at peak, making it numerically the largest single EU national group in Britain. Return migration to Romania, driven by property investment, family reunion, career opportunities in a rapidly growing economy, and the recognition that Romanian cities now offer quality of life that rivals Western Europe at a fraction of the cost, generates a significant and consistent volume of UK-to-Romania removals. At the same time, Romania is attracting a growing number of British professionals with no Romanian heritage, drawn by Bucharest's emergence as one of Eastern Europe's leading technology hubs, Cluj-Napoca's extraordinary concentration of IT companies and startups, and Timișoara's status as the westernmost major Romanian city and 2023 European Capital of Culture.
The UK-to-Romania road route passes through France, Belgium or the Netherlands, Germany, Austria and Hungary before reaching Romania, covering approximately 1,600 miles from London to Bucharest. Since 1 January 2021, Romania is an EU member state and the UK is a third country. Every household goods removal from the UK to Romania now requires formal customs clearance with ANAF (Agenția Națională de Administrare Fiscală, the National Agency for Fiscal Administration) and the Romanian Customs Authority. Qualifying for Transfer of Residence relief, which exempts your belongings from Romanian import VAT at 19%, requires specific documentation prepared correctly before the vehicle reaches the Romanian border.
RMV manages the complete Romanian customs process on your behalf, including the Transfer of Residence declaration, the itemised and valued inventory, and the customs agent authorisation. Full company details and AIM accreditation are on our About Us page.
Since Brexit, all removals from the UK to Romania require customs clearance with ANAF and the Romanian Customs Authority. To import household goods duty-free, you must qualify for Romanian Transfer of Residence relief. This requirement applies equally to Romanian nationals returning home and British nationals relocating for the first time.
ANAF and the Romanian Customs Authority require formal declaration of all household goods entering Romania from outside the EU. For individuals relocating their primary residence to Romania, the Transfer of Residence scheme provides exemption from Romanian import VAT (19% of the declared value of goods), but only where all eligibility conditions are met and all required documents are supplied correctly before the shipment arrives at the Romanian border.
The eligibility conditions follow the standard EU framework: the importer must have been resident outside the EU for at least 12 months before the move date; all goods must have been owned and used at the UK residence for at least six months; the goods must be imported within 12 months of establishing Romanian residence; and the importer must not sell or transfer the imported goods for at least 12 months after import.
Romania uses the Romanian leu (RON) and has not adopted the euro, though it is committed to eurozone accession at a future date. British nationals moving to Romania require a residence permit for stays exceeding 90 days in any 180-day period. Since Brexit, British nationals must register with the local Inspectoratul General pentru Imigrări (General Inspectorate for Immigration) and obtain a CIF (cod de identificare fiscală, tax identification code) as part of establishing legal residence. RMV does not arrange visas or permits but coordinates your shipment timeline around your confirmed Romanian residency documentation.
The following documents are required for Romanian Transfer of Residence customs clearance. RMV provides all blank forms and pre-departure document review as standard.
The main border crossing for UK-to-Romania removals is typically the Hungarian–Romanian border at Nădlac (for western Romania and Bucharest via Timișoara) or Borș (for northern Romania and Cluj-Napoca). RMV's experience with this route, built through regular operations to and from Romania, means document issues are identified before departure rather than at the border. All packing materials for a Romania move are available through our Packing Shop.
Romania has the largest diaspora community in the UK of any EU country. Return migration to Romania, particularly among those who moved to Britain in the decade following EU accession in 2007, has accelerated significantly in recent years. These movers range from individuals returning with a few years of accumulated UK possessions to families who have spent fifteen or more years in Britain and are returning with full household contents accumulated over that time. RMV has moved this community extensively, and understands the combination of practicality and sentiment that characterises moves of long-established households. The same post-Brexit customs requirements apply to Romanian nationals returning home as to British nationals moving to Romania: goods must have been owned for at least six months and the move must occur within 12 months of establishing Romanian residence.
Cluj-Napoca has emerged as one of Europe's most concentrated technology ecosystems per capita. The city hosts over 600 IT companies and startups, with a talent base anchored by the Babeș-Bolyai University and the Technical University of Cluj-Napoca. Companies including Bosch, Continental, Nokia, Betfair and a dense cluster of Romanian tech unicorns and scale-ups have established significant engineering operations in the city. Bucharest similarly hosts operations for Amazon, Google, HP, Orange and IBM alongside a growing domestic startup ecosystem. British technology professionals moving to these hubs typically have one to three-bedroom apartment contents. Our man and van service handles smaller professional moves, and our removals service manages full household relocations with customs coordination.
The Babeș-Bolyai University in Cluj-Napoca, the University of Bucharest and Alexandru Ioan Cuza University in Iași are Romania's leading research institutions, attracting international academic staff and postgraduate researchers. Iași, in northeastern Romania, is the country's second-largest city and a major university town with a significant student population. Part load and groupage services are standard for student and early-career academic moves.
A distinct and growing segment of British movers to Romania are those drawn by the country's extraordinary natural environment: the Carpathian Mountains, the Transylvanian plateau, the Danube Delta, and medieval towns like Brașov, Sighișoara and Sibiu that offer living history at a price point that has become inaccessible in comparable Western European settings. British retirees and lifestyle movers in this category often purchase rural properties in Transylvania's Saxon villages, which offer stone-built houses, mountain proximity and a way of life that has changed slowly. Full-load removals are standard for these moves. Pre-departure storage through our storage service is used where the UK property is vacated before the Romanian property is ready.
Romania's combination of a highly educated workforce (particularly strong in engineering and software), competitive operating costs, EU membership, and a domestic market of approximately 19 million people makes it an increasingly attractive base for UK businesses. Commercial relocations to Bucharest and Cluj-Napoca require EORI-registered customs handling and commercial invoice documentation. Our removals service covers commercial relocations for businesses of all sizes.
RMV offers three transport formats for UK-to-Romania removals. Romania's geographic size means transit times vary significantly between western cities like Timișoara and eastern destinations like Iași and the Moldavian region.
Your belongings occupy the entire vehicle from UK collection to Romanian delivery. The vehicle loads at your UK address and travels directly to your Romanian destination via Germany, Austria and Hungary, with customs clearance managed at the Romanian border. Full load to Bucharest typically takes 4–6 days door to door; to Cluj-Napoca 4–5 days; to Timișoara 3–5 days; to Iași and northeastern Romania 5–7 days; to Brașov and central Transylvania 4–6 days. Full load is standard for three-bedroom or larger household moves and for any move requiring schedule certainty.
Your belongings are consolidated with those of other customers moving to Romania. You pay only for the cubic metreage your goods occupy. Part load delivery to Bucharest typically takes 6–12 days door to door; to western Romania (Timișoara, Arad) 5–10 days; to eastern Romania allow additional time. Part load is the standard choice for studios, one to two-bedroom apartments, student moves and individual returnees with smaller volumes.
Where the UK departure date and Romanian arrival date do not align, our storage service holds packed contents in secure UK storage. Romanian property transactions, particularly in the competitive Bucharest and Cluj-Napoca markets, can move on different timescales than British buyers expect, making pre-departure storage a useful contingency.
RMV delivers to all Romanian counties and cities. Estimated door-to-door transit times from London are provided below.
All times include customs clearance. Romania's size means that western destinations (Timișoara, Arad) are significantly faster to reach than eastern and southeastern destinations (Iași, Constanța). For Romania-specific moving guides and relocation advice, visit our blog.
Yes. Since 1 January 2021, all removals from the UK to Romania require formal customs clearance with ANAF and the Romanian Customs Authority. This applies equally to Romanian nationals returning home and British nationals relocating to Romania. There are no exemptions based on volume or value. RMV manages the complete customs documentation process on your behalf as standard on every UK-to-Romania booking.
Yes. Post-Brexit customs clearance applies to all shipments from the UK to Romania regardless of nationality. Romanian nationals who have been resident in the UK for more than 12 months and are returning home qualify for Transfer of Residence relief under the same EU framework: goods must have been owned for at least six months and the move must be completed within 12 months of establishing Romanian residence. RMV manages this process for both British and Romanian national movers.
The Romanian Transfer of Residence process allows qualifying individuals to import household goods without paying Romanian import VAT (19% of declared value). RMV prepares all required documentation including the customs declaration, the itemised inventory and the customs agent authorisation, and reviews every document package before the vehicle departs the UK.
No. Romania uses the Romanian leu (RON). Romania is committed to eurozone accession but no adoption date has been confirmed. This is relevant for budgeting local costs after arrival, though customs clearance documentation values are assessed in euros for EU customs purposes.
Full load removals to Bucharest typically take 4–6 days, with the route covering approximately 1,600 miles via Germany, Austria and Hungary. Timișoara in western Romania is faster at 3–5 days. Iași and northeastern Romania can take 5–7 days. Part load services to Bucharest typically take 6–12 days.
UK citizens can visit Romania for up to 90 days in any 180-day period without a visa. For stays exceeding 90 days, including permanent relocation, registration with the Inspectoratul General pentru Imigrări and a residence permit are required. RMV does not arrange visas or permits but coordinates your shipment timeline around your confirmed residency documentation.
For full-load removals of three bedrooms or larger, four to six weeks is recommended given the route length and the importance of complete customs documentation. For part load bookings, three to four weeks is usually sufficient. For urgent requirements, call 0208 0900 232 directly.
RMV Storage & Removals provides end-to-end removals from the UK to Romania, from pre-move survey and packing through customs documentation, road freight via Germany, Austria and Hungary, and door-to-door delivery across all 41 Romanian counties and Bucharest.
Our removals service manages the full physical move; our storage service bridges UK and Romanian timelines; our man and van service handles smaller volumes cost-effectively; and our handyman service provides practical setup support at your UK origin address.
