Poland is the most significant two-way removals market between the UK and any EU country. At the same time, Poland has become an increasingly attractive destination for British professionals who have no family connection to the country, drawn by Warsaw's emergence as one of Central Europe's leading financial and technology hubs, Kraków's combination of a world-class cultural heritage and a booming IT and business process outsourcing sector, and Wrocław's reputation as one of the most liveable mid-sized cities in Europe. Gdańsk, the Baltic port city at the heart of the Solidarity movement, and Poznań, midway between Warsaw and Berlin, complete a picture of a country with genuine urban depth well beyond its capital.

Poland also occupies a unique logistical position in European removals from the UK: it lies on the transit route to all three Baltic states, meaning RMV's teams cross Poland regularly and are deeply familiar with the major routes, border crossings and customs procedures. The UK-to-Warsaw route covers approximately 1,150 miles, making Warsaw one of the closer major continental capitals from London. Since 1 January 2021, Poland is an EU member state and the UK is a third country. Every household goods removal from the UK to Poland now requires formal customs clearance with KAS (Krajowa Administracja Skarbowa, the National Revenue Administration of Poland). Qualifying for Transfer of Residence relief, which exempts your belongings from Polish import VAT at 23%, requires specific documentation prepared correctly before the vehicle reaches the Polish border.

Polish Customs Explained

Since Brexit, all removals from the UK to Poland require customs clearance with KAS (Krajowa Administracja Skarbowa). To import household goods duty-free, you must qualify for Polish Transfer of Residence relief. Poland is also the primary transit country for UK-to-Baltic moves, and RMV's familiarity with Polish border procedures is greater than for almost any other route.

KAS, Poland's customs and tax administration, requires all household goods from outside the EU to be declared. British nationals moving their primary residence to Poland can avoid Polish import VAT (23% of declared value) under Transfer of Residence relief, but only when they qualify and the paperwork is complete before the Polish border.

The EU rules apply in Poland too. You qualify with at least 12 months of residence outside the EU before moving, goods owned and used in the UK for six months or more, import within 12 months of becoming Polish resident, and no sale or transfer for a year.

Poland uses the Polish złoty (PLN) and has not adopted the euro. A residence permit is required once British nationals stay in Poland for more than 90 days in any 180. Since Brexit, British nationals must register with the local Urząd Gminy (municipal office) or relevant Urząd Wojewódzki (voivodeship office) to obtain a certificate of residence (zaświadczenie o zameldowaniu) as part of establishing legal residence. • Passport copy, identity and nationality confirmation for Polish customs (KAS / Urząd Celno-Skarbowy)
• Polish proof of residence: rental contract, property deed or zaświadczenie o zameldowaniu (certificate of residence registration) from the relevant Urząd Gminy
• Signed inventory of all goods, dated and showing an estimated second-hand value for every category
• Completed Transfer of Residence declaration for Polish customs, covering import duty and VAT exemption
• Self-certificate that goods have been owned and used at your UK address for over six months and will not be sold or transferred in the 12 months after import
• Signed customs authorisation allowing RMV to represent you directly with KAS
• Proof of living in the UK for the 12 months before moving: a UK Certificate of Residence, bank statements or council tax bills
• CMR form for road transport, completed by the driver during collection

Part Load and Groupage (Shared Vehicle)

Your belongings are consolidated with those of other customers moving to Poland. You pay only for the cubic metreage your goods occupy. Part load delivery to Warsaw typically takes 4–8 days door to door. Because Poland is on the main Baltic corridor, consolidation departures are more frequent than for most other EU destinations: weekly services to major Polish cities are standard. Part load is the standard choice for studios, one-bedroom apartments, student moves, individuals with small volumes and the significant number of partial moves where only some possessions are being relocated.
