UK to Poland Removal Cost

Poland is the most significant two-way removals market between the UK and any EU country. Decades of Polish migration to the UK created one of Britain's largest diaspora communities, and return migration to Poland, whether permanent relocation, retirement, or career-driven moves back to a rapidly expanding economy, generates a steady and substantial volume of UK-to-Poland removals. At the same time, Poland has become an increasingly attractive destination for British professionals who have no family connection to the country, drawn by Warsaw's emergence as one of Central Europe's leading financial and technology hubs, Kraków's combination of a world-class cultural heritage and a booming IT and business process outsourcing sector, and Wrocław's reputation as one of the most liveable mid-sized cities in Europe. Gdańsk, the Baltic port city at the heart of the Solidarity movement, and Poznań, midway between Warsaw and Berlin, complete a picture of a country with genuine urban depth well beyond its capital.

Poland also occupies a unique logistical position in European removals from the UK: it lies on the transit route to all three Baltic states, meaning RMV's teams cross Poland regularly and are deeply familiar with the major routes, border crossings and customs procedures. The UK-to-Warsaw route covers approximately 1,150 miles, making Warsaw one of the closer major continental capitals from London. Since 1 January 2021, Poland is an EU member state and the UK is a third country. Every household goods removal from the UK to Poland now requires formal customs clearance with KAS (Krajowa Administracja Skarbowa, the National Revenue Administration of Poland). Qualifying for Transfer of Residence relief, which exempts your belongings from Polish import VAT at 23%, requires specific documentation prepared correctly before the vehicle reaches the Polish border.

RMV manages the complete Polish customs process on your behalf, including the Transfer of Residence declaration, the itemised and valued inventory, and the customs agent authorisation. Full company details and AIM accreditation are on our About Us page.

Post-Brexit Customs Clearance for Removals to Poland: What You Need to Know

Since Brexit, all removals from the UK to Poland require customs clearance with KAS (Krajowa Administracja Skarbowa). To import household goods duty-free, you must qualify for Polish Transfer of Residence relief. Poland is also the primary transit country for UK-to-Baltic moves, and RMV's familiarity with Polish border procedures is greater than for almost any other route.

KAS requires formal declaration of all household goods entering Poland from outside the EU. For British nationals relocating their primary residence to Poland, the Transfer of Residence scheme provides exemption from Polish import VAT (23% of the declared value of goods), but only where all eligibility conditions are met and all required documents are supplied correctly before the shipment arrives at the Polish border.

The eligibility conditions follow the standard EU framework: the importer must have been resident outside the EU for at least 12 months before the move date; all goods must have been owned and used at the UK residence for at least six months; the goods must be imported within 12 months of establishing Polish residence; and the importer must not sell or transfer the imported goods for at least 12 months after import.

Poland uses the Polish złoty (PLN) and has not adopted the euro. British nationals moving to Poland require a residence permit for stays exceeding 90 days in any 180-day period. Since Brexit, British nationals must register with the local Urząd Gminy (municipal office) or relevant Urząd Wojewódzki (voivodeship office) to obtain a certificate of residence (zaświadczenie o zameldowaniu) as part of establishing legal residence. RMV does not arrange visas or permits but coordinates your shipment timeline around your confirmed Polish residency documentation.

Documents Required for Removals to Poland from the UK

The following documents are required for Polish Transfer of Residence customs clearance. RMV provides all blank forms and pre-departure document review as standard.

  • Passport copy, identity and nationality confirmation for Polish customs (KAS / Urząd Celno-Skarbowy)
  • Polish proof of residence: rental contract, property deed or zaświadczenie o zameldowaniu (certificate of residence registration) from the relevant Urząd Gminy
  • Itemised and valued inventory of all goods being moved, signed and dated, with second-hand estimated values for each item category
  • Completed Transfer of Residence declaration for Polish customs, covering import duty and VAT exemption
  • Self-certificate confirming goods have been owned and used at UK residence for more than six months and will not be sold or transferred within 12 months of import
  • Signed customs agent authorisation form, permitting RMV to act as your direct representative with KAS
  • Proof of 12 months' UK residence prior to the move date: council tax bills, bank statements or a UK Certificate of Residence
  • CMR cargo movement form, completed on the day of collection by the driver

The German–Polish border at the Oder crossing is the primary entry point for UK-to-Poland removals. RMV's regular transit through this crossing means our teams are well-versed in the documentation requirements. All packing materials for a Poland move are available through our Packing Shop.

Who We Move to Poland

Return Migration: Polish Community Members Returning Home

Poland has one of the largest diaspora communities in the UK, with an estimated 700,000 to 900,000 Polish-born residents at peak. Return migration to Poland, driven by career opportunities, family reunion, retirement, and changed life circumstances, generates the single largest segment of UK-to-Poland removals. These moves range from single-room part load shipments for individuals returning with their UK possessions to full five-bedroom household relocations for families who have spent decades in Britain and are bringing everything back. RMV has moved this community extensively and understands the particular combination of sentimentality and practicality that characterises moves of long-accumulated household contents.

Technology and Finance Professionals Moving to Warsaw and Kraków

Warsaw has developed into a serious Central European financial and technology hub, with Goldman Sachs, Google, Samsung and Amazon all operating significant Warsaw centres, and a domestic tech sector anchored by companies like Allegro, CD Projekt and Booksy. Kraków's IT and business process outsourcing district (centred around the Kraków Technology Park) houses operations for HSBC, IBM, Motorola and dozens of other international firms. British professionals relocating to take up positions in these sectors typically have one to three-bedroom apartment contents and clear employer start dates. Our man and van service handles smaller professional moves, and our removals service manages full household relocations with customs coordination.

Academics and Students Moving to Kraków, Warsaw and Wrocław

The Jagiellonian University in Kraków (founded 1364, the second-oldest university in Central Europe), the University of Warsaw and the University of Wrocław all attract British academics, researchers and Erasmus-route students. Wrocław, which was European Capital of Culture in 2016, has a particularly active international academic community. Part load removals are standard for student and early-career academic moves.

Families and Retirees Relocating to Poland

British nationals with Polish heritage who are retiring to Poland, or British-Polish families relocating their family base, typically require full-load removals of three to five-bedroom household contents. Poland's lower cost of living relative to the UK, good healthcare infrastructure, and the proximity of family networks are the primary motivators. Pre-departure storage through our storage service is used where the UK property is vacated before the Polish property is ready.

Businesses Establishing Polish Operations

Poland is one of the EU's most active destinations for foreign direct investment, particularly in business services, manufacturing and logistics. Commercial relocations to Poland require EORI-registered customs handling and commercial invoice documentation. Our removals service covers commercial relocations for businesses of all sizes.

Service Options: Full Load, Part Load and Groupage Removals to Poland

RMV offers three transport formats for UK-to-Poland removals. Poland's central position in European logistics means departures are more frequent than for most other destinations in this series.

Full Load (Exclusive Vehicle)

Your belongings occupy the entire vehicle from UK collection to Polish delivery. The vehicle loads at your UK address and travels directly to your Polish destination via Germany, with customs clearance managed at the Polish border. Full load to Warsaw typically takes 2–4 days door to door; to Kraków 2–4 days; to Wrocław 2–3 days; to Gdańsk 2–4 days; to Poznań 2–3 days. Poland offers some of the fastest transit times of any destination in this series, given its proximity to the UK via Germany. Full load is standard for three-bedroom or larger household moves and for any move requiring schedule certainty.

Part Load and Groupage (Shared Vehicle)

Your belongings are consolidated with those of other customers moving to Poland. You pay only for the cubic metreage your goods occupy. Part load delivery to Warsaw typically takes 4–8 days door to door. Because Poland is on the main Baltic corridor, consolidation departures are more frequent than for most other EU destinations: weekly services to major Polish cities are standard. Part load is the standard choice for studios, one-bedroom apartments, student moves, individuals with small volumes and the significant number of partial moves where only some possessions are being relocated.

Pre-Departure Storage

Where the UK departure date and Polish arrival date do not align, our storage service holds packed contents in secure UK storage. Given Poland's relatively short transit times, the storage periods for Poland moves are typically shorter than for more distant destinations. However, for movers who are renovating a Polish property or waiting for a new-build to complete, pre-departure storage is a commonly used option.

Removals to Key Polish Cities and Regions

RMV delivers to all Polish voivodeships and cities. Estimated door-to-door transit times from London are provided below.

  • Warsaw (Warszawa), Poland's capital and Central Europe's leading financial and technology hub. Full load 2–4 days; part load 4–8 days.
  • Kraków, Poland's former royal capital with a UNESCO-listed old town, world-class university and a major IT and BPO sector. Full load 2–4 days; part load 4–8 days.
  • Wrocław, the Silesian capital on the Oder, consistently rated one of Europe's most liveable cities. European Capital of Culture 2016. Full load 2–3 days; part load 4–7 days.
  • Gdańsk, the Baltic port city and birthplace of the Solidarity movement, with Sopot and Gdynia forming the Tricity metropolitan area. Full load 2–4 days; part load 4–8 days.
  • Poznań, the western city midway between Warsaw and Berlin, a major trade fair and manufacturing hub. Full load 2–3 days; part load 4–7 days.
  • Łódź, Poland's third city, known for its post-industrial regeneration and growing film and arts scene. Full load 2–4 days; part load 4–8 days.
  • Katowice, the Upper Silesian capital and a major business and music festival hub. Full load 2–4 days; part load 4–8 days.
  • Lublin, eastern Poland's largest city and a significant university and cultural centre. Full load 3–5 days; part load 5–9 days.

All times include customs clearance. Poland's road infrastructure has improved significantly with EU investment in the A1, A2 and A4 motorway corridors, making transit times shorter and more predictable than a decade ago. For Poland-specific moving guides and relocation advice, visit our blog.

Frequently Asked Questions, Removals to Poland from the UK

Do I need customs clearance for removals to Poland since Brexit?

Yes. Since 1 January 2021, all removals from the UK to Poland require formal customs clearance with KAS (Krajowa Administracja Skarbowa). There are no exemptions based on volume or value. This applies to all movers including Polish nationals returning home and British nationals moving for the first time. RMV manages the complete customs documentation process on your behalf as standard on every UK-to-Poland booking.

Does the Brexit customs requirement apply to Polish nationals returning home?

Yes. Post-Brexit customs clearance applies to all shipments from the UK to Poland regardless of the nationality of the mover. Polish nationals who have been resident in the UK for more than 12 months and are returning home can qualify for Transfer of Residence relief under the same EU framework as British nationals: goods must have been owned for at least six months and the move must be completed within 12 months of establishing Polish residence. RMV manages this process for both British and Polish national movers.

What is the Polish Transfer of Residence process?

The Polish Transfer of Residence process allows qualifying individuals relocating their primary residence to Poland to import household goods without paying Polish import VAT (23% of declared value). RMV prepares all required documentation and reviews every document package before the vehicle departs the UK.

Does Poland use the euro?

No. Poland uses the Polish złoty (PLN) and has not adopted the euro. This is relevant for budgeting local costs after arrival. However, customs clearance documentation values are assessed in euros for EU customs purposes. Poland's long-delayed euro adoption remains a politically complex issue, and no adoption date has been set.

How quickly can I get my belongings to Poland?

Full load removals to Warsaw and Wrocław can be completed in as little as 2–3 days from UK collection. Poland is one of the closest major EU countries by road from London, and motorway infrastructure via Germany is well-developed. Part load services to Warsaw typically take 4–8 days.

Do I need a visa or residence permit to live in Poland?

UK citizens can visit Poland for up to 90 days in any 180-day period without a visa. For stays exceeding 90 days, including permanent relocation, registration with the relevant Urząd Gminy or Urząd Wojewódzki and a residence permit are required. Polish nationals returning to Poland re-establish residence through the standard zameldowanie (address registration) process. RMV does not arrange visas or permits but coordinates your shipment timeline around your confirmed residency documentation.

How far in advance should I book a removal to Poland?

For full-load removals of three bedrooms or larger, three to five weeks is recommended. Poland's position on the main Continental corridor means scheduling is more flexible than for more isolated destinations. For part load bookings, two to three weeks is usually sufficient. For urgent requirements, call 0208 0900 232 directly.
