The UK-to-Finland route is one of the longer European removals journeys from London, typically crossing through Germany and Sweden or Denmark and Sweden before the vehicle takes the Stockholm-to-Helsinki or Turku ferry. This ferry component makes the Finland route operationally distinct from purely road-based Central European moves and requires careful scheduling around ferry departure times. Since 1 January 2021, Finland is an EU member state and the UK is a third country. Every household goods removal from the UK to Finland now requires formal customs clearance with Tulli (Finnish Customs). Qualifying for Transfer of Residence relief, which exempts your belongings from Finnish import VAT at 25.5%, requires specific documentation prepared correctly before the vehicle reaches the Finnish border.

Clearing Finnish Customs Since Brexit

Since Brexit, all removals from the UK to Finland require customs clearance with Tulli (Finnish Customs). To import household goods duty-free, you must qualify for Finnish Transfer of Residence relief.

Tulli expects a formal declaration for every household shipment from outside the EU. British nationals settling permanently in Finland can avoid Finnish import VAT (25.5% of declared value) through Transfer of Residence relief, but only if all conditions are met and the documents are correct before the goods reach the Finnish border.

Finland follows the conditions used across the EU: a year or more of residence outside the EU before the move, at least six months' ownership and use in the UK, import within 12 months of taking up Finnish residence, and no sale or transfer for 12 months afterwards.

Finland uses the euro, which simplifies financial transfers for British movers. A residence permit is needed for British nationals staying in Finland beyond 90 days in any 180. We do not arrange permits, but we plan your shipment timeline around your confirmed Finnish residency documentation, as Tulli will require proof of Finnish residence as part of the customs clearance process.

• Passport copy, identity and nationality confirmation for Finnish customs (Tulli)
• Finnish proof of residence: rental contract, property deed or Finnish Population Information System (DVV) registration confirmation
• Signed and dated list of all items, valued at second-hand prices category by category
• Completed Transfer of Residence declaration for Finnish customs, covering import duty and VAT exemption
• A self-certificate stating each item has been in your use at your UK home for over six months and will stay with you for 12 months after import
• Your signed authorisation for RMV to act as direct customs representative with Finnish customs
• Twelve months of UK residence evidence, for example council tax bills, bank statements or a UK Certificate of Residence
• CMR transport document, issued by our driver on collection day

The Finland route includes a Baltic Sea ferry crossing, typically Stockholm–Helsinki or Stockholm–Turku. Ferry booking is coordinated by RMV as part of the removal plan.
