RMV Storage & Removals provides professional removals from the UK to the Netherlands, covering full load, part load and groupage services with complete post-Brexit customs clearance, Dutch Douane documentation, BTW handling, Article 23 VAT deferment guidance and door-to-door delivery to Amsterdam, The Hague, Rotterdam, Utrecht, Eindhoven, Haarlem, Leiden, Delft and all Dutch provinces.
The canal belt access problem is the single most commonly under-estimated logistics challenge on the UK-to-Netherlands route, and it is absent from virtually every removal company's website. Here is what it means in practice for a removal to an Amsterdam canal house.
Amsterdam's grachtengordel, the ring of four principal canals (Prinsengracht, Keizersgracht, Herengracht, Singel) plus the Jordaan district immediately west, contains some of the most sought-after residential addresses for British professionals in the Netherlands.
The five-storey townhouses that line these canals were built in the 17th century when the Dutch Golden Age created a merchant class that wanted conspicuous addresses with large external frontages but narrow internal floors, tax was assessed on canal frontage width.
The result is staircases of approximately 50–60 centimetres width, inclinations of 60–70 degrees, and upper floors that in many buildings can only be accessed at all by furniture via the external hoist beam above the top-floor window.
The hoist beam (hijsbalk) is a permanent fixture on almost all Amsterdam canal houses. Furniture, sofas, wardrobes, beds, dining tables, washing machines, refrigerators, is raised on rope, sling or strap from street level, swung inward through the open window of the relevant floor, and manoeuvred inside.
The canal-side pavement and road are temporarily closed for this operation, which requires an ontheffing (temporary road occupancy exemption) from the Gemeente Amsterdam. The ontheffing must be applied for in advance and specifies the date, duration, vehicle length and position. For wide vehicles, additional objectvergunning (object permits) may be required.
Canal-side parking in the grachtengordel is limited and many streets are accessible only from one direction. RMV's Amsterdam pre-move survey process identifies hoist requirements, permit needs and access constraints for every canal house address before the vehicle is loaded in the UK.
For non-canal-house addresses in Amsterdam, modern apartment blocks in the Zuidas financial district, Amstelveen, Buitenveldert, the Eastern Docklands or Noord, access is generally straightforward and equivalent to any UK urban apartment move. Our removals service covers all Amsterdam addresses; our handyman service handles furniture assembly and reassembly at the destination.
The Randstad, the urban conurbation connecting Amsterdam, Utrecht, The Hague and Rotterdam, accounts for over 85% of UK-to-Netherlands removal volume. Each city draws British movers for distinct professional and lifestyle reasons, and the practical logistics of each move differ accordingly.
Amsterdam is the Netherlands' capital and its primary destination for British professionals across the widest range of sectors: financial services, technology, media, fashion, the creative industries, and the EU agencies and international organisations that relocated here from London after Brexit. Booking.com (headquartered in Amsterdam), Netflix's international content hub, Uber's European headquarters, Adyen, TomTom and hundreds of other tech and digital businesses are Amsterdam-based.
The city is also the Netherlands' primary arts and culture hub and the largest university city by student numbers. Amsterdam moves span the full volume and format range: full-load family houses in Amstelveen or the Watergraafsmeer, part-load one-bedroom canal apartment contents in the Jordaan, and small groupage moves for individual young professionals arriving for a first European posting.
The Hague is the Netherlands' seat of government, the home of the Dutch monarch, and the world's primary centre for international law and arbitration. The International Court of Justice, the International Criminal Court, the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW), the European Patent Office, Europol and dozens of embassies and diplomatic missions are all based in The Hague. British professionals moving to The Hague are predominantly diplomats, international civil servants, lawyers, NGO staff and corporate professionals serving the legal and financial sector that has grown around the international institutions.
The Hague also has a significant international school concentration, the British School in The Netherlands (BSN) has three campuses in the Den Haag / Leidschendam area, making it a preferred destination for British families with school-age children. Our removals service covers all The Hague addresses, and our storage service bridges UK and Dutch timelines where diplomatic postings have fixed start dates.
Rotterdam is Europe's largest seaport by cargo volume and the Netherlands' second-largest city. It was extensively bombed in May 1940 and almost entirely rebuilt after the war, making it, unlike Amsterdam or The Hague, a city of modern and contemporary architecture rather than historic townhouses.
British professionals moving to Rotterdam are predominantly in shipping, logistics, engineering, the energy sector (Shell's global headquarters is in the Rotterdam area at Shell Campus Rijswijk), and port and maritime industries. Rotterdam's modern building stock means access for removal vehicles is generally straightforward compared to Amsterdam: wider streets, modern apartment loading bays, and none of the canal house constraints.
Rotterdam is also significantly more affordable than Amsterdam, making it increasingly popular with British movers seeking Randstad access without Amsterdam prices.
Utrecht is the Netherlands' most centrally located major city and its principal rail interchange, Utrecht Centraal is the busiest station in the country and within 25–30 minutes of both Amsterdam and Rotterdam by train.
This connectivity makes Utrecht an attractive base for British professionals working in multiple Randstad locations or commuting into Amsterdam. Utrecht is also home to Utrecht University (consistently ranked among the Netherlands' top three), the UMC Utrecht medical centre, and a growing technology and life sciences sector. British academics, researchers and university-sector professionals are consistently among the British movers to Utrecht. Our man and van service handles smaller Utrecht moves, including student and academic relocations.
Eindhoven is the home of Philips (founded there in 1891 and still headquartered in the Netherlands), and the Brainport Eindhoven region, the tech and innovation cluster in the south of the Netherlands, is one of Europe's densest concentrations of high-tech manufacturing, semiconductor research and design technology. ASML, the world's only manufacturer of the extreme ultraviolet lithography machines required to produce advanced semiconductors, is headquartered in Veldhoven immediately adjacent to Eindhoven.
British engineers, semiconductor professionals and technology workers are among the fastest-growing British mover segment to the Netherlands, driven by ASML's aggressive international hiring and the growth of the Brainport ecosystem around it.
Haarlem (12 minutes from Amsterdam Centraal by train) and Leiden (15 minutes from Amsterdam Airport Schiphol by train) are the two primary commuter town choices for British expat families who want more space, lower housing costs and a less urban environment while maintaining fast Amsterdam or Schiphol access. Leiden is also home to Leiden University (founded 1575, one of Europe's oldest) and Leiden Bio Science Park, one of the Netherlands' largest life sciences and pharmaceutical clusters, including GlaxoSmithKline's Netherlands operations. Our handyman service covers furniture assembly at Haarlem and Leiden addresses.
All removals from the UK to the Netherlands since Brexit require formal customs clearance with the Dutch Douane (Belastingdienst/Douane). Dutch BTW (Belasting over de Toegevoegde Waarde) stands at 21% of the declared value of goods where Transfer of Residence relief has not been granted. On a household declared at £60,000, a failed Transfer of Residence application results in a BTW liability of £12,600.
Transfer of Residence (ToR) relief allows British nationals relocating their primary residence to the Netherlands to import household goods free of BTW and customs duty, subject to the standard EU eligibility conditions: 12 months of residence outside the EU immediately before the move; all goods owned and in personal use for at least six months; importation within 12 months of establishing Dutch residence; and a commitment not to sell, pledge or transfer the imported goods for at least 12 months after import.
The BRP (Basisregistratie Personen) is the Netherlands' Municipal Population Register. You must register at your local gemeente (municipality) within five days of establishing Dutch residence. BRP registration confirmation is required as part of the Transfer of Residence customs documentation for the Douane. Without BRP confirmation, goods may be held pending proof of Dutch residency. RMV coordinates shipment delivery timing around your confirmed BRP registration status.
Article 23 (Vergunning artikel 23) is a Dutch mechanism allowing businesses registered with the Douane to defer BTW payment on imports. It is primarily a business tool, not directly applicable to private household movers, but relevant for any British mover with a Dutch company registration, self-employment status, or ZZP (zelfstandige zonder personeel) registration. RMV's move managers assess Article 23 eligibility at the pre-move survey stage for movers with Dutch business registrations.
The following documents are required for Dutch Douane customs clearance and Transfer of Residence relief. RMV provides all forms, completion guidance and pre-departure review as standard on every UK-to-Netherlands booking.
The Netherlands is one of the UK's closest European road removal destinations. London to Amsterdam is approximately 540 km by road, making it comparable in distance to Luxembourg and significantly shorter than Germany, France or Italy. Full load next-day delivery to the Randstad is achievable; part load typically 2–3 days.
Your goods occupy the entire vehicle from UK collection to Dutch delivery. London to Amsterdam: 1–2 days. London to Rotterdam, The Hague, Utrecht: 1–2 days. London to Eindhoven: 1–2 days.
Full load is the right format for three-bedroom or larger households, moves involving high-value or fragile items, and any delivery requiring a confirmed date tied to an employer start date or Dutch tenancy commencement.
Your belongings share vehicle space with other consignments moving to the Netherlands or nearby destinations. You pay for the cubic metres occupied. Transit: 2–3 days to the Randstad, 3–4 days to Groningen, Maastricht or Zeeland. Part load is the dominant format for Amsterdam studio and one-bedroom flat moves, student moves to Utrecht or Eindhoven, and all single-professional city relocations.
For studio contents, single-room moves, student relocations to Dutch universities, or any move where the volume does not justify a part-load minimum, our man and van service provides maximum flexibility at the lowest price point. The Netherlands is one of the most man-and-van-appropriate European routes given its short transit distance from London.
Estimated door-to-door transit times for UK-to-Netherlands removals from London, including post-Brexit Dutch Douane customs clearance.

Yes. Since 1 January 2021, all removals from the UK to the Netherlands require formal customs clearance with the Dutch Douane (Belastingdienst/Douane). There are no volume or value exemptions. RMV manages all Douane customs documentation as standard on every UK-to-Netherlands booking.
Dutch BTW (Belasting over de Toegevoegde Waarde) is the Netherlands' VAT, applied at 21% on imported household goods where Transfer of Residence relief has not been established. On a £60,000 declared household, a failed Transfer of Residence application results in a BTW liability of £12,600. A successful Transfer of Residence application eliminates this liability. Dutch BTW at 21% is comparable to Germany's 19% but lower than Italy's 22% and Denmark's 25%.
Article 23 (Vergunning artikel 23) is a Dutch mechanism allowing businesses registered with the Douane to defer BTW payment on imports from the point of entry to their periodic BTW return.
The BRP (Basisregistratie Personen) is the Netherlands' Municipal Population Register. You must register at your local gemeente (municipality) within five days of establishing Dutch residence. BRP registration confirmation is required as part of the Transfer of Residence customs documentation for the Douane. Registering as early as possible, ideally before or on the day of delivery, allows customs clearance to proceed without delay. Without BRP confirmation, goods may be held pending proof of Dutch residency.
Canal houses in Amsterdam's grachtengordel have internal staircases of approximately 50–60 cm width at inclinations of 60–70 degrees. Standard furniture cannot be carried through them. Delivery relies on the external hoist beam (hijsbalk) above the top-floor window, which requires rope-and-sling hoisting of furniture from street level through the open window.
This requires a temporary road occupancy permit (ontheffing) from Gemeente Amsterdam, applied for in advance. RMV identifies hoist requirements, permit needs and canal-side loading constraints for every Amsterdam canal house address before the vehicle departs the UK.
Holland is not the official name of the country, that is the Netherlands (Nederland). Holland refers specifically to the two western provinces of North Holland and South Holland, which together contain Amsterdam, Haarlem, Leiden, The Hague, Delft and Rotterdam. Because these provinces contain most of the country's largest cities and the majority of the British expat population, 'Holland' and 'Netherlands' are often used interchangeably in a removals context, but the country's official name, and the correct term for customs and residency documentation, is the Netherlands.
RMV Storage & Removals provides end-to-end removals from the UK to the Netherlands, from pre-move survey and packing through Douane customs documentation, BRP timing guidance, Amsterdam canal house access planning and door-to-door delivery to any Dutch address.
Our removals service manages the full physical move; our storage service bridges UK and Dutch timelines; our man and van service handles studios, student moves and small Dutch city relocations; our handyman service provides furniture assembly at your Dutch address.
All packing materials are available through our Packing Shop. For Netherlands-specific guides, canal house logistics and 2026 checklists, visit our blog.
