RMV Storage & Removals provides professional removals from the UK to Malta, covering full load and groupage services with complete post-Brexit customs clearance, Transfer of Residence documentation and delivery to Valletta, Sliema, St Julian's, Mdina, Victoria (Gozo) and all Maltese islands.
Malta occupies a unique position among British movers' international destinations. It is the only EU member state where English is an official language alongside Maltese, the only EU country that drives on the left, and one of the few EU destinations where the British expatriate community is large, long-established and deeply integrated into the fabric of local life. For British retirees in particular, Malta has historically been one of the most approachable EU destinations: familiar legal framework (based on English common law principles), English-speaking bureaucracy, a Mediterranean climate with over 300 days of sunshine per year, and a healthcare system that is accessible to residents. Valletta, the European Capital of Culture in 2018, is the world's smallest capital city by area. Sliema and St Julian's form the commercial and social heart of modern Malta. Mdina, the ancient walled city, and the three cities of Vittoriosa, Senglea and Cospicua offer quieter residential alternatives. Gozo, Malta's sister island, appeals to movers seeking a slower pace and a more rural character.
The UK-to-Malta route is fundamentally different from all other European removals in this series. Malta is an island nation in the central Mediterranean, with no road connection to the European mainland. All road removals from the UK to Malta travel overland through France, Italy (typically down to Sicily or Catania), with the vehicle then loaded onto a roll-on roll-off (RoRo) ferry to Malta. The entire UK-to-Malta journey covers approximately 2,000 miles of road plus the Sicilian ferry crossing. Since 1 January 2021, Malta is an EU member state and the UK is a third country. Every household goods removal from the UK to Malta now requires formal customs clearance with the Customs Department within the Malta Revenue and Customs Agency. Qualifying for Transfer of Residence relief, which exempts your belongings from Maltese import VAT at 18%, requires specific documentation prepared correctly before the consignment crosses into EU territory.
RMV manages the complete Maltese customs process on your behalf, including the Transfer of Residence declaration, the itemised and valued inventory, and the customs agent authorisation. Full company details and AIM accreditation are on our About Us page.
Since Brexit, all removals from the UK to Malta require customs clearance with the Malta Customs Department. To import household goods duty-free, you must qualify for Maltese Transfer of Residence relief. The route is an island move with an Italian road leg and a RoRo ferry crossing to Malta, which affects both scheduling and cost.
The Malta Customs Department requires formal declaration of all household goods entering Malta from outside the EU. For British nationals relocating their primary residence to Malta, the Transfer of Residence scheme provides exemption from Maltese import VAT (18% of the declared value of goods), but only where all eligibility conditions are met and all required documents are supplied correctly before the consignment enters the EU at the French border.
The eligibility conditions follow the standard EU framework: the importer must have been resident outside the EU for at least 12 months before the move date; all goods must have been owned and used at the UK residence for at least six months; the goods must be imported within 12 months of establishing Maltese residence; and the importer must not sell or transfer the imported goods for at least 12 months after import.
Malta uses the euro and has done so since 2008. British nationals moving to Malta require a residence permit for stays exceeding 90 days in any 180-day period. Since Brexit, British nationals must register with the Identity Malta Agency (now Identità) to obtain an eResidence card, which functions as the formal proof of residence required for the Transfer of Residence customs process. Malta's strong English-language bureaucracy means this process is more straightforward than in many other EU member states. RMV does not arrange visas or permits but coordinates your shipment timeline around your confirmed Maltese residency documentation.
The following documents are required for Maltese Transfer of Residence customs clearance. RMV provides all blank forms and pre-departure document review as standard.
The EU customs entry for a Malta move occurs at the first EU border (typically France), not at Malta itself. All customs documentation must be complete before the vehicle leaves the UK. RMV reviews every document package before departure. All packing materials for a Malta move are available through our Packing Shop.
Malta's British retirement community is one of the largest and most established in the EU. The combination of English as an official language, a familiar legal system, a warm climate, EU healthcare access for residents, and property that remains affordable by UK standards compared to France or Italy makes Malta a compelling choice for British retirees. The most popular areas for British retirees are Sliema and its surrounding districts, the Three Cities, Mdina and Rabat, and the quieter villages of the Maltese interior. Gozo, with its rural character and slower pace, is particularly popular for those who want to leave urban life behind entirely. Full-load removals are standard for most retirement relocations. Pre-departure storage through our storage service is frequently used where the UK property is sold before the Maltese property is finalised.
Malta is one of Europe's leading jurisdictions for online gaming regulation, and the Malta Gaming Authority (MGA) has attracted a significant cluster of online gaming, sports betting and iGaming companies to the island. British professionals in software engineering, product management, compliance and marketing for gaming companies represent a consistent and growing segment of UK-to-Malta moves. Professional relocations in this sector are typically one to two-bedroom apartment contents. The gaming industry's concentration in St Julian's and Sliema means these professionals are often relocating to the most accessible parts of the island. Our man and van service handles smaller professional moves, and our removals service manages full household relocations with customs coordination.
The Malta Financial Services Authority (MFSA) has built a framework for financial services, insurance and fintech that attracts international businesses seeking an English-language EU regulatory environment. British professionals working for companies with Maltese financial licences, particularly in insurance, fund administration and digital asset services, form a distinct mover segment. These are typically professional apartment relocations rather than full family household moves.
British families relocating permanently to Malta, particularly through the Malta Permanent Residence Programme or the Global Residence Programme, typically require full-load removals of three to five-bedroom household contents. The international school network in Malta, including the British School of Malta, makes family relocation practical. Pre-departure storage through our storage service bridges the gap between UK and Maltese property timelines.
The Malta route operates differently from mainland European removals. Because all moves require a RoRo ferry crossing from Sicily to Malta, the logistics are coordinated around ferry departure schedules. RMV manages the full route including ferry booking.
Your belongings occupy the entire vehicle from UK collection to Maltese delivery. The vehicle travels through France and Italy to a Sicilian port (typically Catania or Pozzallo), crosses to Malta on a RoRo ferry, and delivers directly to your Maltese address. Full load to Valletta and Sliema typically takes 7–10 days door to door, including the ferry crossing. Full load to Gozo requires an additional short ferry connection from Malta's Ċirkewwa terminal. Full load is the standard choice for three-bedroom or larger household moves and for any move requiring schedule certainty.
Your belongings are consolidated with those of other customers moving to Malta. You pay only for the cubic metreage your goods occupy. Groupage delivery to Malta typically takes 10–18 days, reflecting the consolidation process and ferry scheduling. Groupage is the standard choice for studios, one to two-bedroom apartments, professional moves and any move where cost is the primary consideration. Because the Malta route is an island move with fixed ferry schedules, part load consolidation is more structured than for mainland European routes.
Where the UK departure date and Maltese arrival date do not align, our storage service holds packed contents in secure UK storage. The Malta property market, particularly in the highly competitive Sliema and St Julian's areas, can move quickly, and storage provides the flexibility to move out of the UK property without being committed to a specific Maltese move-in date.
RMV delivers to all Maltese addresses including Gozo and Comino. Estimated door-to-door transit times from London are provided below.
All times include customs clearance and the Sicily–Malta ferry crossing. Gozo deliveries require an additional ferry connection from Ċirkewwa, coordinated by RMV. For Malta-specific moving guides and relocation advice, visit our blog.
Yes. Since 1 January 2021, all removals from the UK to Malta require formal customs clearance with the Malta Customs Department. There are no exemptions based on volume or value. RMV manages the complete customs documentation process on your behalf as standard on every UK-to-Malta booking.
All road removals to Malta include a RoRo ferry crossing from Sicily (typically from Catania or Pozzallo) to Malta's Valletta Grand Harbour. RMV books and coordinates this ferry crossing as part of the removal plan. Ferry services on this route run regularly, but schedules must be booked in advance, particularly for full-load vehicles. The crossing takes approximately 90 minutes and is well-established for commercial freight. Gozo deliveries require a second, shorter ferry from Malta's Ċirkewwa terminal.
Yes. English is an official language of Malta alongside Maltese, which means government agencies, banks, estate agents, healthcare providers and legal professionals all operate in English. This makes Malta significantly more accessible for British movers in practical terms than any other EU member state. The customs documentation process, in particular, is more straightforward because Maltese customs officials and agents work in English as standard.
The Maltese Transfer of Residence process allows qualifying British nationals to import household goods without paying Maltese import VAT (18% of declared value). You must be relocating your primary residence to Malta, have been resident outside the EU for at least 12 months, and have owned all goods for at least six months. RMV prepares all required documentation and reviews every document package before the vehicle departs the UK.
The Identità eResidence card (issued by Malta's Identity Malta Agency, now operating as Identità) is the formal proof of Maltese residence for non-EU nationals, including British nationals since Brexit. It functions as the primary residency document for customs clearance purposes. RMV coordinates your shipment timeline around the availability of your eResidence card documentation, as this is required as part of the Transfer of Residence customs declaration.
Full load removals to Valletta and Sliema typically take 7–10 days door to door, including the overland route through France and Italy and the Sicily–Malta RoRo ferry crossing. Groupage services typically take 10–18 days. Gozo deliveries take 1–2 days longer due to the additional Malta–Gozo ferry connection.
For full-load removals of three bedrooms or larger, six to eight weeks is recommended given the route complexity, ferry booking requirements and thorough customs documentation preparation. For groupage bookings, four to five weeks is usually sufficient. For urgent requirements, call 0208 0900 232 directly.
RMV Storage & Removals provides end-to-end removals from the UK to Malta, from pre-move survey and packing through customs documentation, overland transport through France and Italy, Sicily–Malta RoRo ferry coordination and door-to-door delivery across Malta and Gozo.
