RMV Storage & Removals provides professional removals from the UK to Germany, covering full load, part load and shared load services with complete post-Brexit customs clearance, German Customs Form 0350 support and door-to-door delivery to Berlin, Munich, Frankfurt, Hamburg, Cologne, Stuttgart, Düsseldorf, Leipzig and all regions of Germany.
Germany is the UK's most significant European trading partner and consistently ranks as one of the top three destinations for British professionals relocating within the EU. What sets Germany apart from every other European country on the removals map is its structure: Germany is genuinely decentralised.
Unlike France, where Paris dominates every category of relocation, Germany has seven major cities that each draw significant volumes of British movers for entirely different reasons. A move to Berlin is almost nothing like a move to Munich.
The driver behind a Frankfurt relocation, financial services, the European Central Bank, Deutsche Bank, asset management, is completely different from the driver behind a Hamburg move, or a Stuttgart move, or a Cologne move. Understanding which city you are moving to is the first variable in planning a UK-to-Germany removal correctly.
RMV's move managers build a quote around your specific German city, your property type, and your customs documentation status, not a generic “European” price. For full company details and AIM accreditation, see our About Us page.
Since 1 January 2021, the UK is treated as a third country by German and EU customs authorities.
All removals from the UK to Germany now require formal customs clearance, and qualifying for duty-free import under Transfer of Residence relief requires German Customs Form 0350 and a specific documentation package that must be in place before your shipment crosses the border.
Germany also has a legal address registration requirement, the Anmeldung at the Einwohnermeldeamt or Bürgeramt, that must be completed within 14 days of moving into a German property. This is not a customs requirement but a legal residency obligation, and it has implications for how RMV times your delivery.
All removals from the UK to Germany since Brexit require formal customs clearance with the German Zollamt. German Customs Form 0350 is the specific Transfer of Residence declaration for duty-free import of household goods, and Germany's 14-day Anmeldung registration requirement is a legally separate obligation that affects delivery timing.
German import VAT (Einfuhrumsatzsteuer) stands at 19% of the declared value of goods. For a household move with a declared value of £60,000, a failed or incorrectly prepared Transfer of Residence application means a VAT exposure of £11,400.
This is the financial stakes of getting German customs documentation wrong, and it is why German customs, which the brief correctly identifies as famously strict, rewards thorough, accurate preparation.
Transfer of Residence (ToR) relief allows British nationals relocating their primary residence to Germany to import their household goods duty-free and VAT-free, subject to the standard EU eligibility conditions: you must have lived outside the EU for at least 12 months; all goods must have been owned and used at your UK residence for at least six months; the goods must be imported within 12 months of establishing German residence; and you must not sell, pledge or transfer the imported goods within 12 months of import.
The German-specific declaration for this process is German Customs Form 0350 (Vordruck 0350, also referred to as the Zollformular 0350), which is filed with the relevant German Zollamt (customs office) for your destination region. This is distinct from the Austrian ZBefr Form 2/2a, the French Déclaration de Déménagement and the Danish Customs Form 12024; the Germany-specific version must be used.
The Abmeldebescheinigung is the German deregistration certificate issued when a person deregisters from a previous German address. It is relevant to movers who were previously registered as German residents and are returning from a UK period of residence.
The Abmeldebescheinigung can serve as documentation of prior EU residence for customs purposes on return moves and is sometimes requested alongside Form 0350 to establish the residency timeline. RMV's move managers assess each client's prior residency history to determine which documents are required.
The Anmeldung, address registration at the local Einwohnermeldeamt or Bürgeramt, must be completed within 14 days of moving into a German property.
This is a German legal requirement that applies independently of customs status. Failure to register within 14 days can result in a fine of up to €1,000. The Anmeldung confirmation (Anmeldebestätigung) is also required for opening a German bank account, registering with a German health insurer, applying for a tax identification number (Steueridentifikationsnummer) and, where relevant, for the Transfer of Residence customs process itself. RMV coordinates shipment delivery timing around your confirmed Anmeldung address wherever possible.
The following documents are required for German Transfer of Residence customs clearance under German Customs Form 0350. RMV provides all blank forms, completion guidance and pre-departure document review as standard on every UK-to-Germany booking.
All packing materials for a Germany move, export cartons, bubble wrap, furniture pads and specialist packaging, are available through our Packing Shop.
Germany is not a single removals market, it is seven distinct ones. Berlin, Munich, Frankfurt, Hamburg, Cologne, Stuttgart and Düsseldorf each draw British movers for completely different professional and lifestyle reasons, and the volume, timing and logistics of each move differ accordingly.
Berlin is the UK's highest-volume single destination in Germany and the dominant choice for young British professionals, creatives, digital workers, academics and students.
The city's startup ecosystem, Europe's largest by number of companies, combined with its arts and music scene, university concentration (Humboldt-Universität, Freie Universität, Technische Universität Berlin) and comparatively low cost of living relative to Munich or Frankfurt make it the default first international posting for many British movers under 35. Berlin moves are typically smaller in volume: a studio or one to two-bedroom flat in Mitte, Prenzlauer Berg, Kreuzberg or Friedrichshain, often part load or shared load. Our man and van service handles the smallest Berlin loads cost-effectively where a full removal vehicle is not required.
Munich is Germany's most expensive city and the destination for British professionals taking up senior roles in the automotive sector (BMW's global headquarters is in Munich, and Audi's is in nearby Ingolstadt), financial services, aerospace (Airbus has a major presence in Munich), and the life sciences sector. Munich moves are typically larger in volume, higher in declared value, and more likely to involve specialist items, premium furniture, art, wine, high-end electronics.
Full-load dedicated vehicle service is the standard format for Munich. Our removals service handles the complete move; our handyman service covers furniture assembly and setup in the Munich property.
Frankfurt is Germany's financial capital and home to the European Central Bank, Deutsche Bank, Commerzbank, and the Frankfurt Stock Exchange (Deutsche Börse).
It is also the largest airport hub in continental Europe, making it the logistics centre for international corporate relocations. British professionals relocating to Frankfurt are typically in financial services, asset management, legal or consulting roles, often on defined employer contracts.
Frankfurt moves tend to be one to three-bedroom flat contents with a fixed delivery window dictated by the employer start date. Our storage service bridges UK and Frankfurt timelines where accommodation is not confirmed on the UK departure date.
Hamburg is Germany's second-largest city and its principal port, home to Airbus's primary European assembly operations, the headquarters of several major shipping and logistics companies, and a thriving media and advertising sector.
British professionals moving to Hamburg are often in engineering, logistics, media production or maritime industries. Hamburg's geography, spread across the Elbe estuary with numerous bridges, waterfront districts and older apartment buildings, requires specific access planning that RMV addresses at the pre-move survey stage.
The Rhine-Ruhr conurbation, covering Cologne, Düsseldorf, Dortmund, Essen and Bonn, is the most densely populated region in Germany and a major destination for British professionals in fashion and retail (Düsseldorf is Germany's fashion capital), consulting, technology and financial services. Düsseldorf also has the largest Japanese expat community in Europe, creating a distinctly international relocation environment with established infrastructure for international moves. Our removals service covers all Rhine-Ruhr destinations.
Stuttgart is home to two of the world's most recognisable automotive brands, Mercedes-Benz and Porsche both have their headquarters and major manufacturing operations in the Stuttgart region.
British engineers, designers and automotive professionals relocating to Stuttgart typically require full-load or dedicated van service, often with specialist packing for technical equipment, workshop tools and industry-specific items. Our handyman service is available for assembly and setup at the Stuttgart destination.
RMV offers three transport formats for UK-to-Germany removals. Germany's proximity, London to Berlin is approximately 1,100 km by road, makes it one of the most accessible European destinations for direct van services, with transit times that are among the fastest on any UK-to-EU route.
Your belongings occupy the entire vehicle from UK collection to German delivery, with no consolidation or shared stops. Full load delivery to Germany is fast by European standards: London to Berlin typically 2–3 days; London to Frankfurt and Hamburg 1–2 days; London to Munich and Stuttgart 2–3 days; London to Cologne and Düsseldorf 1–2 days.
Full load is the right choice for three-bedroom or larger household moves, for moves involving high-value or fragile items, and for any move where a confirmed delivery date is essential.
Your belongings share vehicle space with other customers moving to Germany or nearby European destinations. You pay only for the cubic metres your goods occupy. Part load delivery to Germany is 3–6 days to most cities from London. This is the most common format for Berlin moves and for any move involving a studio, one or two-bedroom flat, student contents or single room.
Germany's university system, with over 400 higher education institutions including world-ranked universities in Munich (LMU, TU München), Berlin (Humboldt, FU, TU), Heidelberg, Frankfurt and Hamburg, draws a consistent stream of British students and postgraduate researchers each year.
Student removals to Germany are typically the smallest volume category: a single room or studio flat, cost-sensitive, and well-suited to part load or the smallest tier of our man and van service. International students in Germany also qualify for a specific customs exemption on study materials and personal equipment, which RMV's move managers confirm and document separately from the standard Transfer of Residence pathway.
Estimated door-to-door transit times for UK-to-Germany removals from London, including customs clearance.
All transit times include customs clearance and assume the Anmeldung address is confirmed before the shipment departs the UK. For Germany-specific moving guides, Anmeldung advice and 2026 relocation checklists, visit our blog.
Yes. Since 1 January 2021, all removals from the UK to Germany require formal customs clearance with the German Zollamt. There are no exemptions based on volume or value. RMV manages the complete customs documentation process on your behalf as standard on every UK-to-Germany booking.
German Customs Form 0350 (Vordruck 0350) is Germany's specific Transfer of Residence declaration, the document filed with the relevant German Zollamt to qualify your household goods for import free of German VAT (19% of declared value) and customs duty. It is required for all primary residence relocations from outside the EU to Germany.
It is different from the Austrian ZBefr Form 2/2a, the French Déclaration de Déménagement and the Danish Customs Form 12024. RMV provides Form 0350, completion guidance and pre-departure review as standard.
The Anmeldung is Germany's compulsory address registration at the local Einwohnermeldeamt or Bürgeramt. It must be completed within 14 days of moving into a German property; this is a legal obligation, not a suggestion. The Anmeldebestätigung (registration confirmation) is needed for opening a German bank account, registering with a health insurer and applying for a tax ID number, and is relevant to the Transfer of Residence customs documentation. RMV coordinates delivery timing around your confirmed Anmeldung address.
The Abmeldebescheinigung is the German deregistration certificate issued when you formally deregister from a previous German address. It is relevant if you were previously registered as a German resident and are returning from a period of UK residence. It can serve as documentation of prior EU residency for customs purposes on return moves and is sometimes requested alongside Form 0350. RMV's move managers assess each client's prior residency history individually.
Yes, if you qualify for Transfer of Residence relief under German Customs Form 0350. You must be relocating your primary residence to Germany, have lived outside the EU for at least 12 months, and have owned all goods for at least six months.
All items must be imported within 12 months of establishing German residence and must not be sold or transferred for at least 12 months after import.
For studios, one-bedroom flats and student moves, part load (shared load) removals to Germany are the most cost-effective option; you pay only for the cubic metres your belongings occupy.
For very small volumes, RMV's man and van service provides maximum flexibility. For larger moves, a dedicated full-load service is faster and avoids consolidation delays. Call 0208 0900 232 or email info@rmvlondon.com for a route-specific quote.
For full-load removals of three bedrooms or larger, four to six weeks is recommended to allow time for survey, Form 0350 preparation and vehicle scheduling. For part load bookings, two to three weeks is usually sufficient. Start your Anmeldung process and confirm your German address as early as possible; it is the single most important scheduling variable for a Germany move.
RMV Storage & Removals provides end-to-end removals from the UK to Germany, from pre-move survey and packing through German Customs Form 0350 documentation, Anmeldung timing coordination, international road freight and door-to-door delivery to any German city or address.
Our removals service manages the full physical move; our storage service bridges UK and German timelines; our man and van service handles smaller volumes and student moves; and our handyman service provides furniture assembly and setup at origin and destination.
All packing materials are available through our Packing Shop. For Germany-specific guides, Anmeldung checklists and 2026 relocation advice, visit our blog. For AIM accreditation details, see our About Us page. For our full European and worldwide overview, see our international removals page.
