RMV Storage & Removals provides professional removals from the UK to Denmark, covering full load, part load and groupage services with complete post-Brexit customs clearance, Danish Customs Form 12024 documentation and door-to-door delivery to Copenhagen, Aarhus, Odense, Aalborg, Esbjerg and all Danish regions.
Denmark is one of the most consistently high-ranking destinations for British professionals, academics and families relocating within Europe. Copenhagen has been ranked among the world's most liveable cities for years in succession, driven by a combination of world-class public services, a compact and cycle-friendly urban environment, a strong creative and technology economy, and the Danish concept of hygge that has made the country's quality-of-life reputation travel well beyond Scandinavia.
For British professionals, Denmark's concentration of international pharmaceutical companies (Novo Nordisk, Leo Pharma), shipping and logistics companies (Maersk's global headquarters is in Copenhagen), green energy firms and the architecture and design sector creates a consistent route for work-driven relocations from the UK.
Copenhagen is also home to one of the most significant UN campuses in the world, the UN City complex in Nordhavn, drawing international civil servants, diplomats and development professionals from across the UK.
Since 1 January 2021, Denmark is an EU member state and the UK is a third country. All removals from the UK to Denmark now require formal customs clearance with the Danish Customs Agency (Toldstyrelsen), a process that involves specific Danish documentation, including Customs Form 12024, and a registration requirement that is unique to Denmark: your Danish address registration must be completed before your shipment arrives in the country.
Shipments that arrive before Folkeregistret (municipal) registration is confirmed cannot clear Danish customs without being placed in bonded warehouse storage, which adds cost and delay. RMV's move managers coordinate the timing of your shipment with your Danish registration status to prevent this. Full company details and AIM accreditation are on our About Us page.
Denmark's customs rules for removals from the UK include one requirement that is unique among EU destinations: your Danish municipal registration (Folkeregistret) must be completed before your shipment arrives. Goods arriving before registration is confirmed will be placed in bonded storage, incurring additional charges.
Denmark's import VAT rate on household goods is 25%, higher than France and Austria, both of which apply 20%. For a household move with a declared value of £50,000, an incorrect or failed Transfer of Residence application means a VAT exposure of £12,500. This is the financial context that makes Danish customs preparation the most consequential single task in planning a UK-to-Denmark removal.
The Transfer of Residence (ToR) relief scheme allows British nationals relocating their primary residence to Denmark to import their household goods free of Danish import VAT and customs duty, but only if the eligibility criteria are met and the correct documentation package is in place before the shipment departs the UK.
The eligibility conditions are: you must have been resident outside the EU for at least 12 consecutive months; all goods must have been owned and used at your UK residence for at least six months; the goods must be imported within 12 months of your arrival date in Denmark; and you must not sell, pledge or lend the imported goods for at least 12 months after import.
New items, generally those purchased within six months of the move, do not qualify and will be subject to full Danish VAT and duty.
Two additional Denmark-specific rules apply regardless of Transfer of Residence status. First, alcoholic beverages are subject to strict control by Danish customs because of Denmark's high excise duty rates on alcohol; spirits in particular are not advisable to include in a removal shipment and will attract full duty and tax if declared.
Wine and beer included in a shipment require a detailed inventory listing brand, alcohol percentage, bottle quantity and size. Second, food and tinned goods are generally not permitted in household goods shipments to Denmark, and their inclusion can cause customs delays and additional inspection charges. RMV advises all clients on prohibited and restricted items during the pre-move survey process.
The following documents are required for Danish Transfer of Residence customs clearance. Danish Customs Form 12024 is the country-specific declaration form, different from the forms used for Austria, France or any other EU destination.
Note on electrical appliances: Danish regulations require that electrical appliances conform to Danish electrical specifications. RMV advises on any items that may require adaptation before shipment. All packing materials for a Denmark move are available through our Packing Shop.
Copenhagen is the dominant destination on the UK-to-Denmark route. The city's employer base, Maersk, Novo Nordisk, the UN City complex, the wind energy sector (Vestas and Ørsted both have major Copenhagen operations), the pharmaceutical corridor stretching from Copenhagen to Malmö across the Øresund Bridge, and a fast-growing technology and startup ecosystem, generates a consistent flow of British professional relocations.
Typical moves are one to three-bedroom flat contents on a fixed employer start date, often with the Folkeregistret registration already in progress. Our removals service manages the complete move with customs coordination; our man and van service handles smaller professional loads, a single room or studio flat contents, cost-effectively.
Denmark's universities, the University of Copenhagen, the Technical University of Denmark (DTU) in Lyngby, Aarhus University, the IT University of Copenhagen and Copenhagen Business School, attract a significant number of British postgraduate students and academic staff each year.
Student and academic moves are typically small in volume and require a cost-sensitive part load or groupage solution: shared vehicle transport where you pay only for the cubic metres your belongings occupy.
Danish customs also provide a specific exemption for students: full-time students can import personal equipment and teaching materials free of customs duty and VAT without requiring Transfer of Residence status, an important distinction that affects how the customs documentation package is prepared.
British families relocating permanently to Denmark, whether to Copenhagen's family-friendly outer suburbs, to the university cities of Aarhus and Odense, or to the rural communities of Jutland, typically require full-load removals of three to five-bedroom household contents.
Pre-departure packing support and temporary storage through our storage service bridges the gap where the UK property is vacated before the Danish property is ready, avoiding the common situation where packed contents have no confirmed destination and the Folkeregistret registration is not yet complete.
British nationals moving goods to a Danish secondary residence, rather than transferring their primary residence, are not eligible for Transfer of Residence relief. Danish import VAT at 25% applies to the declared value of goods moved to a second home. RMV's move managers assess each client's residency situation at the time of booking to confirm the correct customs pathway and VAT exposure before any shipment is confirmed.
Commercial relocations from UK premises to Danish offices, covering Copenhagen's international business district, Aarhus and the logistics hubs of Jutland, require EORI-registered customs handling and commercial invoice documentation. Our removals service covers commercial moves to Denmark of all scales. For furniture assembly and setup at Danish business premises, our handyman service provides practical on-site support at the destination.
RMV offers three transport formats for UK-to-Denmark removals. The choice between full load, part load and groupage depends on volume, budget and whether your Folkeregistret registration timing allows for a direct or consolidated delivery.
Your belongings occupy the entire vehicle from UK collection to Danish delivery, a direct van service with no consolidation stops. The vehicle loads at your address and drives directly to your Danish property, with customs clearance en route via the Channel crossing and the German transit corridor to Denmark.
Full load delivery to Copenhagen and Zealand typically takes 2–4 days door to door; to Jutland destinations (Aarhus, Aalborg, Esbjerg) 3–5 days. Full load is the right choice for three-bedroom or larger household moves and for any move where delivery date certainty is essential.
Your belongings are consolidated with those of other customers moving to Denmark or the Scandinavian region. You pay only for the cubic metres your goods occupy, making this the most cost-effective option for small apartments, single rooms, studios and student moves.
Part load delivery to Denmark typically takes 5–10 days door to door to Copenhagen and Zealand, and 6–12 days to Jutland.
This is the most common service format for UK-to-Denmark removals, as the majority of British movers to Denmark are individuals or couples in one to two-bedroom properties.
For the smallest UK-to-Denmark moves, a handful of boxes, a single room, or a student load, RMV's man and van service provides a flexible and cost-efficient solution. This is particularly relevant for British professionals taking up short-term positions in Copenhagen or Aarhus who are moving only essential items and leaving their larger UK household contents in storage.
Denmark's Folkeregistret registration requirement, the need for your Danish address to be confirmed before your shipment can clear customs, makes pre-departure storage a practical necessity for many movers. Where there is a gap between UK departure and confirmed Danish address, our storage service holds your packed contents securely until your Danish registration is complete and a delivery date can be confirmed.
RMV delivers to all Danish regions. Copenhagen and the Island of Zealand receive the highest volume of UK-to-Denmark removals; Jutland cities including Aarhus, Aalborg and Esbjerg are the primary destinations for family and rural relocations.
All transit times include customs clearance and assume Folkeregistret registration is confirmed before the shipment departs. For Denmark-specific moving guides, customs checklists and 2026 relocation advice, visit our blog.
Yes. Since 1 January 2021, all removals from the UK to Denmark require formal customs clearance with the Danish Customs Agency (Toldstyrelsen). This applies regardless of the volume or value of goods. RMV manages the complete customs documentation process on your behalf as standard on every UK-to-Denmark booking.
Danish Customs Form 12024 is Denmark's specific Transfer of Residence declaration, the form submitted to Toldstyrelsen to qualify your household goods for import free of Danish import VAT (25% of declared value).
It is required for all primary residence relocations from outside the EU to Denmark and is distinct from the customs forms used for Austria (ZBefr Form 2/2a), France (Déclaration de Déménagement) or any other EU destination. RMV provides the form, completion guidance and pre-departure document review as standard.
Danish customs rules require that the importer is already registered as a resident in Denmark before their shipment arrives in the country. Goods that arrive before Folkeregistret registration is confirmed cannot clear Danish customs in the normal way; they must be placed in bonded warehouse storage, which adds cost and delays delivery. RMV coordinates your shipment departure date with your confirmed Danish registration status to prevent this from happening.
Wine and beer can be included in a removal shipment to Denmark but require a detailed inventory listing brand name, alcohol percentage, bottle count and size.
Spirits are strongly not recommended: due to Denmark's high excise duty rates on alcohol, spirits included in a removal shipment will attract full duty and tax regardless of Transfer of Residence status.
Food and tinned goods are generally not permitted and their inclusion risks customs delays and additional inspection charges. RMV advises on all restricted and prohibited items as part of the pre-move process.
Part load (or groupage) means your belongings share vehicle space with other customers moving to Denmark or Scandinavia.
You pay only for the cubic metres your items occupy, making it the most cost-effective option for studios, one-bedroom flats, student moves and small household volumes. Delivery typically takes 5–10 days to Copenhagen and Zealand. It is the most common service format on the UK-to-Denmark route.
Denmark uses standard EU 230V/50Hz electricity with Type K plugs (three round pins with an earth pin). Most UK electrical appliances with 230V compatibility will function correctly, but sockets require adaptors or rewiring.
Danish customs regulations specify that electrical appliances must conform to Danish electrical specifications; RMV advises on this during the pre-move survey.
For full-load removals of three bedrooms or larger, four to six weeks is recommended to allow time for survey, customs form preparation and vehicle scheduling.
For part load bookings, two to three weeks is usually sufficient. Begin your Folkeregistret registration process as early as possible; it is the single biggest scheduling variable on the UK-to-Denmark route. For urgent requirements, call 0208 0900 232 directly.
RMV Storage & Removals provides end-to-end removals from the UK to Denmark, from pre-move survey and packing through Danish Customs Form 12024 documentation, Folkeregistret timing coordination, international road freight and door-to-door delivery at any Danish address.
Our removals service manages the full physical move; our storage service bridges UK departure and Danish registration timelines; our man and van service handles smaller volumes and more flexible moves; and our handyman service provides furniture assembly and setup support at origin and destination.
All packing materials for a Denmark move are available through our Packing Shop. For Denmark-specific relocation guides and 2026 moving advice, visit our blog.
