Expert Packing Tips for a Smooth Move with RMV Storage & Removals

Moving can be a daunting process, but with over 15 years of experience in packing, moving, and storing belongings across London, the UK, and Europe, RMV Storage & Removals knows exactly what it takes to make the process as smooth as possible. Our moving house packing tips are designed to help you prepare thoroughly, ensuring a seamless, stress-free transition on moving day.

Proper packing isn't just about efficiency; it's about protecting your belongings and avoiding unnecessary costs. By following our packing advice, you'll not only be ready when the removal team arrives, but you'll also help ensure your items are packed securely and safely, reducing the risk of damage that may not be covered by insurance.

Whether you're a first-time mover or a seasoned packer, our comprehensive guide will help you tackle every step, so you can move with peace of mind, knowing that everything has been carefully considered and prepared.

Use the Correct Box Size:

  • Small boxes - For heavy items, books, ornaments, crockery, and glassware. (18”x12”x12”)
  • Medium boxes - For clothing, kitchen appliances, pots, and pans. (18”x18”x12”)
  • Large boxes - For lightweight and bulky items, bedding, and odd-shaped items. (18”x18”x20”)

Packing Tips:

  • Pack books into small boxes to avoid excess weight. Place them at the bottom of the box with lighter items on top.
  • Pack living room electronics into one box (e.g., internet router, TV decoder, cables).
  • Collect all small and medium picture frames from around the house and pack them into a box. Mark the box with “fragile” tape.
  • Dismantle lamps, wrap them carefully, and place them in a box. Fill any spaces with paper and label with “fragile” tape.
  • TVs should ideally be packed in the original box. If unavailable, ask your movers if they can protect it with bubble wrap or blankets.
  • For larger picture frames and mirrors, check if your moving service includes wrapping.
  • Small plant pots can be packed in boxes; do this last and create breathing holes. Clearly label the box.

Packing Fragile and Breakable Items:

  • Wrap each item individually with packing paper or bubble wrap for larger items. Avoid placing heavy items on top.
  • Use scrunched paper to line the bottom of the box and to fill any gaps or space at the top.
  • Pack extra paper inside bowl-shaped items or vases.
  • Use “fragile” tape on the top of these boxes.

Items You Must Pack Separately:

  • Cleaning products and chemicals.
  • Toiletries.
  • Liquid foodstuffs and oils; ideally transport these yourself or load them onto the van at the end.
  • Pack these items carefully—seal lids with tape, place them in plastic bags upright, and fill any spaces with towels if possible.
  • Clearly label the boxes with contents and load them onto the van last.

Items That Should Not Be Packed or Transported by Your Movers:

  • Paints and varnishes.
  • Fire alarms and security alarms.
  • Any items that belong to the property.
  • Valuables, such as laptops, jewelry, small items, and cash, should be packed and transported separately.

Kitchen Packing Tips

  • Unplug the fridge and freezer the night before.
  • Seal any open food packages with tape before packing.
  • Keep cleaning chemicals separate, sealing lids with tape and placing items in plastic bags upright in a single layer in the box.
  • Pack oils, sauces, and other liquids separately and handle carefully, similar to cleaning products.
  • Pack crockery, glassware, and other breakables with care:
  • Stack plates vertically.
  • Wrap each item individually. Bubble wrap larger items, and place scrunched paper inside bowls and cups.
  • Use scrunched paper to line the box and fill any space at the top; label with “fragile” tape.
  • Place paper between stacked items like bowls and pans to avoid scratches.
  • Wrap knives and sharp items securely, and clearly label them for safety.

How to Pack a Box:

  • Consider the weight; ensure it’s manageable to lift.
  • Avoid leaving large empty spaces inside; fill with scrunched paper for stability.
  • Don’t overfill boxes; leave at least half a centimeter at the top, with scrunched packing paper on top.
  • Ensure the sealed box top is flat for easy stacking.
  • If an item doesn’t fit, place it in a new box.
  • In each box, keep the heaviest items at the bottom with lighter ones on top.
  • Seal all boxes with packing tape—don’t use masking tape or Sellotape. Tape along the center seam and edges, top and bottom.
  • Label all boxes with room origin and contents using a Sharpie.

Dismantling, Packing, and Moving Furniture

  • Use non sticky tape^ to secure furniture parts together when appropriate.
  • Place screws and attachments in a plastic bag, attaching it to the furniture with non-sticky tape^.
  • Check with your movers if furniture wrapping is included in your service.
  • Inform your movers of any antique items and take extra care with these.
  • Ask your movers if small chests or side tables can be transported with contents inside to save space and boxes.

^ non sticky tape would be a tape that doesn’t leave marks or glue on your furniture. (We use paper tape)

Pack a Box of Essentials:

  • Include notepad, pen, scissors, tape, and basic tools.
  • Phone and laptop chargers.
  • Regular medications.
  • Basic toiletries, towels, and cleaning supplies.
  • Essentials for children or pets, a change of clothes, and pyjamas.
  • Important documents (e.g., keys, passports, IDs, contracts, bank details).
  • Clearly label essential boxes, and keep them separate from the rest—ideally transporting these yourself.
  • Packing Clothes and Bedding
  • Pack clothes in medium boxes, folding items to save space.
  • Pack delicate clothing in wardrobe boxes.
  • Pack shoes separately in layers with sheets of paper between.
  • Pack bedding in boxes and clearly label them for easy unpacking.

Have a great move!!!!
